A petition has been set up urging Aberdeen City Council to rethink its decision to reduce the speed limit on a busy entrance to the city.
More than 1,000 people have put their name to calls for the limit on the Kingswells to Westhill stretch of the A944 Aberdeen to Alford road to be increased, rather than reduced to 40mph.
The road was previously 50mph, but campaigners are keen to see it increased to 60mph.
The petition was launched on Saturday, after members of the enterprise, strategic planning and infrastructure committee last week agreed to slash the limit to improve safety in the area, which is being heavily redeveloped.
Engineer Colin Gray, 44, of Westhill, who set up the petition, said: “The new 40mph limit is neither justifiable nor practical.
“It simply serves to frustrate drivers and criminalise perfectly safe driving.
“There has been a lack of consultation and no reasons have been given for the changes.
“The whole point of trunk roads is that you change speed.”
Last week, officers urged councillors to reduce the speed due to the amount of development in the area, and pointed out that it was already 40mph at the new Prime Four Business Park at Kingswells.
They also said that due to the planned Aberdeen bypass interchange, and the new traffic lights which have replaced the roundabout at the entrance to Westhill, there would be “less confusion” for motorists if the whole road was 40mph.
A council spokesman said last night: “The traffic order covering the A944 between Kingswells and the Westhill boundary was dealt with according to proper statutory procedures following the committee decision to agree to the speed limit reduction for road safety reasons and because of the increasing scale of development on the busy road corridor.
“Statutory consultations were carried out before the traffic order was confirmed, including with the local community councils.”
