St Cyrus could soon welcome an increase in visitors as plans to extend the popular Ecclesgreig Holiday Park have been given the go-ahead.
Owners SDR (Scotland) bought land to the north west of the site with aims to double capacity.
It follows a surge in bookings brought on by the Covid pandemic and rise in staycations.
The firm bought the disused and derelict park site back in 2017 and it is now “full and thriving” following years of redevelopment.
An application was submitted to Aberdeenshire Council last year for permission to change the use of the vacant piece of land for the expansion.
Ecclesgreig Holiday Park currently has 28 holiday home plots, four touring pitches and two glamping pods with hot tubs.
What is included in the holiday park expansion?
Now an extra 17 touring pitches, three holiday lodges and six static pitches will be added to the park.
A shower and toilet block, picnic area and play area will also be created.
The new extension will create six full and part-time jobs.
It is hoped that the expanded facility will help to attract more visitors to St Cyrus and the surrounding areas of Johnshaven and Gourdon.
The plan was considered by the Kincardine and Mearns area committee earlier this week.
‘Great for tourists visiting from near and far’
The proposal proved to be popular with local residents and visitors alike as 29 letters of support were submitted to the council.
Elaine Hill said the plan was “a much-needed boost for the community”.
While Christopher Adam believed the expansion was “well thought out”.
He said: “An extension to the existing park can only but improve the area, more jobs for the village and more visitors arriving to see such a beautiful park.”
His comments were echoed by Kris Main who said that the proposal would be a “very positive boost to local businesses and great for tourists visiting from near and far”.
Plan to benefit local economy
Council planners said the extension would “bring increased benefits to the local economy”.
Following a brief discussion the application was unanimously given the go-ahead by councillors.
