A north-east fishing boat caused an international emergency after crew on-board triggered an alarm accidentally which was picked up by coastguards in Canada.
The Peterhead-registered Ellorah was floating a few miles off the north-east coast just before 11pm when an EPIRB – Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon – was set off by mistake.
Coastguards in Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, were alerted to the alarm after it was picked up by satellites, and notified Aberdeen Coastguard immediately.
A spokesman for the Granite City team said they made contact with the crew, who reassured them it had been a mistake.
