Searches are continuing today for a woman who was swept away by the River Don.

Hazel Nairn was walking her Westie Ruaridh when the tragedy unfolded at Monymusk on Friday afternoon.

Police, coastguards and fire mounted a search for the 71-year-old grandmother, but so far no trace of her has yet been found.

Police divers, police dogs and air support are involved in the search, which is focusing on the area she was last seen at 3.05pm on Friday.

Inspector Andrew Meikleham said: “Police are continuing to carry out searches and enquiries to trace 71-year-old Hazel Nairn, who was last seen in the water at the River Don, near to Monymusk around 3.05pm on Friday November 18.

“The searches are being carried out in and around the area where Hazel was last seen. Local officers and search advisors are being assisted by a number of specialist resources including the dive and marine unit, air support unit and police dogs.”

Yesterday, coastguards were seen searching the riverbanks at Fetternear Estate, near Kemnay.

Much of the area is still underwater after three days of heavy rain caused the river to burst its banks.

Locals have been asked to keep an eye out for Ms Nairn while out walking – but only if it is safe to do so.

Community rallies around

It is believed her dog did not go into the river. However, it is unclear if he has been found.

The community has rallied together since news of the tragedy spread, and gathered last night for a Hope for Hazel vigil at Monymusk Parish Church.

Rev Euan Glen said the church was practically full, with people keen to light a candle and say a prayer.

He said: “The church was virtually full and the family was very touched by the turnout from the community.

“It was lovely to see so many people there supporting a family in need.”

Online, people have been passing on their well-wishes for Ms Nairn’s two children and their families.

Lesley Boxall wrote: “Very sad news. I worked with Hazel for a few years and she was a very kind lady.”

Joyce Owen posted: “Totally tragic, thoughts are with all Hazel’s family and friends. A lovely and loyal colleague for many years.”
