Eagle-eyed world cup fans were delighted – and surprised – to see a Dons flag at a match held earlier today.
The Aberdeen Football Club flag was spotted during the Senegal – Netherlands match held in the Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East. The game kicked off at 4pm, UK time.
The opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup was held yesterday afternoon with the BBC kicking off its coverage.
In a break from tradition, it began – not with the opening ceremony – but with Gary Lineker giving a powerful speech on Qatar’s record on human rights.
In the crowd of the Senegal -Netherlands game one viewer, using the Twitter name @JK_1903_, spotted the Dons flag behind the net.
They said: “Ha ha ha why is there a Dons flag in Qatar?”

Fans then took to the social media site to explain why the Aberdeen fans might be at the game.
A number of pundits said the fans might be there as they were oil workers who lived part-time in the region.
Another, Michael Scott, said: “I’ve been playing the game of ‘find the Scotland flag’ at World Cups and Euros for years. Nearly every game you’ll see one.”
Tartan Sheep said: “Cause we are massive”.
The final whistle saw a two goal win for the Dutch side in the group stage of Group A.
