Supermarket Aldi are introducing new signs to direct people to what is needed by foodbanks.
The supermarket also plans to donate £250,000 to organisations to help with an increase in demand to foodbank services as the winter months place increasing strain on people.
This will be an additional boost to Aldi’s already successful partnership with the community engagement platform Neighbourly, which allows Aldi to donate its surplus food every day of the year.
Earlier this month the Scottish pensioners forum called on supermarket chains to do their bit and support elderly people struggling to put food on the table.
How does the emergency foodbank drive work?
To help with the funds and its foodbank drive Aldi will be introducing new signs to inform customers of the most in-demand items with foodbanks as selected by the target organisations themselves.
These can then be put at the donation points located by the checkouts, which should be in place by early December.
Liz Fox, corporate responsibility director at Aldi UK, said: “We know that Christmas is already a particularly challenging time for many, but this year is understandably going to be even tougher for a lot of households.
“That’s why we’re more committed than ever to doing what we can to give back. We want to make food accessible for all and hope both our additional funding and donation drive will help to make a real difference in Aberdeen.”
Get involved with The Big Christmas Food Appeal
Help keep families fed and warm this winter.
We all know people who are desperately worried about getting by this winter as food and energy prices soar.
That’s why The Big Christmas Food Appeal is back.
The Press and Journal, Evening Express, Original 106 and Energy Voice are joining forces to shine a light on the tireless work groups, charities and volunteers are doing to keep the most vulnerable fed.
Once again we’re working closely with charity Cfine, which supports communities across Grampian, the Highlands and Islands.
