A man has been charged following an incident in Stonehaven in which police discharged a firearm.
The 31-year-old was involved in a “hostage situation” in the town’s Hunter Place at around 12.40pm on Monday afternoon.
Police used a firearm and taser during the incident and the man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
He has since been charged and will appear in Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
Residents in the area reported hearing “a bang” while the incident was ongoing.
Police remain on scene
Police have confirmed police remain in the area around Hunter Place conducting inquiries but reassured the public that there is no wider danger.
Chief Superintendent Kate Stephen said: “Officers will continue to be in the area today as inquiries are carried out.
“I want to reassure the public that this was a contained incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
“Anyone with any concerns or information should speak to officers or contact police via 101.”
Police under investigation
Police are under investigation following Monday’s incident, with PIRC confirming it received a report after a firearm was used.
A spokeswoman said: “We have been made aware of an incident involving the discharge of a police firearm in Stonehaven on November 21. There is no ongoing threat to the public.
“The incident was referred to us by Police Scotland. We will examine the circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Chief Constable in due course”.
