Police investigation launched after man’s body discovered near north east school

PoliceĀ are appealing to the public for help identifying a mystery man who was found dead in the street.

The body of the man, believed to have been in his 60s or 70s, was discovered in a lane near Lochpots Primary School in Fraserburgh.

A passerby made a desperate attempt to revive him, but to no avail.

Last nightĀ – more than 24 hours after the grim find – police admitted they were no closer to knowing his name and issued a public appeal for information.

Local labourer Marc Hornal, stumbled across the body in the lane in the Robertson Road area on Sunday night and alerted the emergency services.

Last night the 32-year-old spoke of his shock and said he hoped the man’s family could be found.

He said: “I was walking home around 9pm and came across him and dialled 999.

“I thought he was just drunk or something so gave him a shove and asked if he was okay. There was no response so I dialled 999 and the lady told me what to do.

“It was just weird the position he was in, slumped over with his head in a black recycling tub. It looked like he was being sick but there was nothing there.

“I first thought I could feel a pulse but I’m not sure now. He was still very warm.”

While Mr Hornal spoke to the emergency services the ambulance operator explained how to do CPR, however the casualty was declared dead at the scene.

Mr Hornal added: “I’ve stayed here nearly all my life but never saw him once. It’s just a shame. It’s horrible. I hope they find his family.”

Police said they did not believe there were any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death but urged anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Inspector Kevin Goldie said: “We are appealing for information that could help us identify a man who was sadly found deceased in the Robertson Road area of Fraserburgh.

“The man was wearing white trainers, black tracksuit bottoms, a grey fleece top and a light-coloured hat and we believe he may be aged in his 60s or 70s.

“If anyone has concerns for a relative or friend and who matches the description, we ask that you get in touch so we can establish who this man is.”

Lochpots Primary School, which has more than 200 pupils, was open as usual yesterday but the lane was cordoned off.

Paul Bannerman lives nearby and was unable to take his daughter to school along their usual route. He said: “There were police standing either side of the lane.

“We had to go round the other way and then again in the afternoon. There are quite a few people who use the lane. It’s not wide, there are flats along the back and the rest is just playing fields.”

Last night local councillor Charles Buchan expressed his sympathies.

He said: “It’s very, very sad. I’m sure when his family and friends are found everyone will empathise with them for their loss.”
