The body of a dog has been found as the search for missing Hazel Nairn continues.
The 71-year-old was swept away by the River Don as she and West Highland Terrier Ruaridh tried to get home due to the deteriorating weather.
The tragedy unfolded in Monymusk at about 3.10pm on Friday.
Much of the region was on flood alert at the time, with torrential rain causing the Don and Dee to burst their banks.
As rescuers continue their efforts to find the grandmother, they have now confirmed Ruaridh was found yesterday.
Their search is now moving downstream, towards Aberdeen.
At First Minister’s Questions on Thursday, Nicola Sturgeon said her thoughts were with the family and friends of Ms Nairn.
Divers continue the search
Inspector Andrew Meikleham said: “Due to the deteriorating weather that afternoon, Hazel had been trying to get home safely from the village of Monymusk along with her dog.
“The body of Hazel’s dog was found near to the river on Wednesday, November 23.”
Police say the search will be assisted by specialist resources including the dive and marine unit today.
The community has rallied together since news of the tragedy spread, and gathered on Sunday night for a Hope for Hazel vigil at Monymusk Parish Church.
Rev Euan Glen said the church was practically full, with people keen to light a candle and say a prayer.
Other members of the community passed on the well-wishes to Ms Nairn’s two children and their families online.
