A busy Aberdeen road was closed today so emergency repair works could be carried out.

The eastbound lane of Virginia Street was closed to traffic between Guild Street and Commerce Street due to a collapsed manhole cover.

Scottish Water teams arrived on site since this morning with work completed before 4.30pm.

The westbound lanes remained open.

The closure caused traffic to come to a gridlock in the city centre with those travelling to Market Street queuing back as far as Duthie Park on Riverside Drive.

Stagecoach Bluebird announced a number of its services were experiencing delays of up to 30 minutes.

Congestion was als0 reported on Guild Street where a number of services exit the bus station.

As a result, all 727, 290 and 291 buses were going along Bridge Street upon leaving Union Square. However, no bus stops were missed out.

Motorists were advised to use an alternative route via Market Street, Union Street, Castle Street and King Street.
