Police investigate alleged sectarian tweet to Celtic striker

Police Scotland have launched an investigation into a sectarian tweet appearing to target Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths.

The tweet, sent after Aberdeen’s 4-0 loss at Celtic Park on Sunday, is believed to have been sent by Twitter user Mark Simpson, from Aberdeen.

A police spokeswoman said: “We’ve been made aware of these tweets and enquiries are at an early stage.”

The allegedly sectarian comments were in reply to a post-match victory tweet from 24-year-old Celtic striker Griffiths – who doubled the lead for the Glasgow side from the penalty spot in the second half of Sunday’s match.

The comments come just a day after another man from Aberdeen was charged in connection with alleged offensive comments relating to an 11-year-old Celtic fan with Down’s Syndrome.

Simpson has since de-activated the Twitter account after he was named and shamed online by disgusted fans.
