Latest figures from the Scottish Government show that 47 of 536 (8.8%) consultant posts are vacant. However, NHS Grampian said it had recently filled 10 consultant roles, bringing the vacancy rate down. The figures come amid well-documented recruitment issues at the NHS board. Only three mainland boards have a greater rate of empty posts at consultant level – including NHS Highland, which has 20 top-level vacancies. (16.6%). Richard Baker MSP said the figures were “deeply concerning” and said the Scottish Government must free up the resources required for NHS Grampian. A spokeswoman for the Scottish Government said the board’s share of the health budget had increased from 9.1% to 9.7% since 2007. She also said NHS staffing levels had also increased under the current government.
