An Aberdeen charity is opening a new store filled with children’s toys, books, and furniture in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Somebody Cares Scotland is opening its children’s store on Thursday on Denmore Road in Bridge of Don.

The shop, across the road from Sterling Furniture, will be open throughout December for people to organise their Christmas shopping.

It has a variety of toys, including plush teddies and plastic toys, DVDs, books and some children’s furniture on offer.

The Aberdeen-based charity focuses on providing free food, clothing and furniture to vulnerable people across the north-east, with a focus on alleviating poverty.

It already has its megastore in the Hazlehead area to help raise funds to support the service.

‘There’s a need for things to be cheaper’

Anne Magarin, corporate fundraiser for Somebody Cares, hopes the shop will help people already struggling with the cost of living.

She said: “Because of the cost-of-living crisis we’re in at the moment, everything is going up, and more and more children are living in poverty in Aberdeen.

“There’s a need for things to be cheaper in general – children should not be without beds or a toy for Christmas.

“There is definitely a need for people to be able to shop at prices they can afford, which is unfortunately not the case when you go to a lot of high street shops.

“Our prices will obviously be cheaper being a charity, but at the same time we will raise funds for our operation to help people who cannot even afford to shop in charity shops.”

Ms Magarin added the new shop will play a “huge role” in helping Somebody Cares to keep giving vulnerable people furniture, food, and clothing.

The shop will open from 9.30pm until 4.30pm every Monday to Friday and until 5pm on Saturday.
