A new £4.8million sport facility in Aberdeen has been officially opened following very successful first two months.

More than 60 guests attended a special ceremony at Get Active @ Northfield as David Cameron cut the ribbon on Sport Aberdeen’s newly refurbished venue.

The former Northfield Swimming Pool reopened in October after a major revamp, with funding from Aberdeen City Council, Sport Aberdeen and Sport Scotland.

It includes a 82ft swimming pool with six lanes, a 40-station gym and a studio with fitness classes for all ages and abilities, as well as a community wellbeing space.

‘Investment in people and wellbeing’

Mr Cameron was delighted to learn how the local community has embraced the new facility in just two months, with more than 700 members having already signed up.

One customer praised Get Active @ Northfield and said the “excitement and buzz” in the local community has been evident.

Mr Cameron said: “In providing a chance to enjoy all the fun and health benefits that sport brings, this is above all an investment in people and their wellbeing.”

Mark Cowan, head of facilities at Sport Scotland, which supported the project with its highest value grant of £100,000, said the venue plays a significant role in improving the lives of local communities.

Tony Dawson, Sport Aberdeen chairman, said: “It has been such a rewarding feeling to welcome the local community to their newly-renovated venue and it is great to see it being well-used so far.

“Through shared knowledge and resources from Sport Aberdeen, Aberdeen City Council and Sport Scotland, we are delighted to offer more opportunities for people across the city to get active and get involved in sport and physical activity.”
