An ambulance crew took Mr Pirie, of the Dufftown area, to Dr Grays hospital in Elgin for treatment for his injuries, but he died soon after.
Two other men, believed to be the drivers of the two other cars were also injured in the crash – a 22-year-old man was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries, while a 26-year-old man was treated at the scene.
Sergeant Rob Warnock, from the Aberdeenshire and Moray Road Policing Unit, said: “I am appealing for any witness who may have seen the three vehicles involved in this collision at the time of or prior to the collision to contact Police Scotland on 101.”
