A Fraserburgh police officer has launched an innovative new campaign to steer the town’s young people away from the dangers of legal highs.
Sergeant Sam Buchan secured funding from the Choices for Life programme to run a series of workshops for youngsters in the area.
The former CID officer is kicking off the project this weekend with a visit from Edinburgh-based charity Fast Forward.
A series of weekly sessions at the JIC building in Fraserburgh’s Albert Lane will follow.
Yesterday Sergeant Buchan said: “I feel very strongly about these so called legal highs. They’re dangerous substances which can be deadly but are so difficult to cut out.
“Being on the frontline of policing you see the effect they can have on young people.
“I wanted it to be about creating a lasting legacy rather than just a one-off talk. There are a lot of talks and I wanted to veer away from that.”
The initiative is been organised with the help of Aberdeenshire Council’s senior community learning worker Sandra Ross. She said: “The workshops will begin later this week and will give participants the opportunity to examine a range of issues, including the effects of drugs and alcohol on the body.
“As well as working with young people, training and upskilling is being provided to council staff and partners, giving additional support in addressing particular issues with young people.
“We are all looking forward to the workshops and hope that those who attend them find them interesting and informative.”
