With nearly nine centuries worth of history, it’s no surprise that Aberdeen harbour has gone through a lot of changes over the years.
The harbour has been around for so long that cameras hadn’t even been invented for several hundred years which is bad news for this gallery!
But the oldest image in our gallery does still manage to convey a stark contrast from the way modern day Aberdeen looks that you would be forgiven for not realising it’s the same city.
It dates back to 1945 as the Second World War was coming to an end in the city and shows the barricades were still in place.
When oil was discovered near Aberdeen in the 1970s it transformed the Granite City as oil vessels soon arrived at the harbour which can be seen in the gallery below.

1988 – Deeside Kayak Club members Neil West and Alan Reid put in some training on the River Dee.
1974 – A demonstration of how the harbour’s radar surveillance system works from its control tower.
1987 – An aerial view of Aberdeen Harbour.
1979 – Repairs to Aberdeen’s North Pier get under way yesterday after part of it collapsed.
1979 – Edward Weston, Robert Hepburn and Ian Shand hard at work on Aberdeen Trawlerowners and Traders Engineering Company’s new extension. Strikes had held up work on the project.
1945 – Aberdeen Harbour before barricades were removed.
1993 – A delegation from Kazakhstan Utetileuova Bakyt, Turegaliev Keldibay and Akanov Nurlibek visit Leeds-based delegation organiser Jim Finley and George Brebner, managing director of TrainCo.
