Two people who were left with life-threatening injuries after a crash on the outskirts of Peterhead remain in hospital this morning.
Four ambulances, fire crews and police were called to the two-car crash on South Road just before 9pm on Friday.
Firefighters used cutting gear to free one person from a silver Vauxhall Zafira, which collided head-on with a white Honda CRV.
Five people were taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, suffering from a variety of chest, rib and stomach injuries.
The two who suffered “life-threatening injuries” were travelling towards Peterhead town centre in the Honda.
Last night a police spokeswoman said: “Everyone is still in hospital. The road reopened on Saturday at around 3.15pm.”
A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We have taken five patients down to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
“Three of them have chest injuries, one has rib injuries, and the final patient has stomach injuries.
“The seriousness of their injuries are currently unknown. We sent out four ambulances to the scene.”
A member of staff from a nearby garage reported that she had been told the crash had been a head-on collision.
The stretch of South Road between the A90 McDonald’s roundabout at the junction with Meethill Road was closed for more than 16 hours while police crash investigators worked to establish the cause of the crash.
it happened near the town’s silver Welcome to Peterhead side, at a spot where the speed limit changes from 40mph to 60mph.
In a separate incident yesterday emergency services were called to battle a car fire after a vehicle broke down on the A96 Inverness to Aberdeen road.
A silver Volkswagen Golf was attended to in a bus stop between Thainstone and Kintore on the southbound carriageway.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent three units to the scene, two from Inverurie and one from North Anderson Drive.
Police were also called but there were no road closures.
