The north-east could soon be home to the one of the best-quality cinema screens in the world.
Cineworld has entered talks with landlords at both their Union Square and Queen’s Links premises in Aberdeen as they look into setting up an Imax screen in the city.
The revolutionary digital film projection technology offers an immersive cinematic experience for film fans using a curved screen to project movies in greater size and resolution.
However, the nearest screen is currently 86 miles from Aberdeen city.
While Scotland’s third city lacks an Imax screen – Glasgow has two, while Edinburgh and Perth have one each.
Imax projections are sharper than others, with speakers aligned to ensure the most visceral experience possible and screening rooms geometrically designed to make sure every seat in the house has the best possible view.
Yesterday, a Cineworld spokeswoman confirmed they were looking to see if they can find a place for an Imax screen in the north-east.
She said: “Here at Cineworld we continually review our cinema venues across the UK to ensure we provide the best in entertainment for local communities.
“We would really like to bring Imax to Aberdeen and in this respect, we are in talks with our landlords at both Union Square and Queens Links. As soon as we know, we will advise accordingly.”
Local filmmaker Brodie Marno last night welcomed the steps towards an Imax screen in the city.
The Banchory-based producer behind Whistle My Lad – which was filmed in several locations in Aberdeenshire including Crovie and Finzean – said: “It would be fantastic for Aberdeen having an Imax cinema. It would be brilliant for the industry and for people in general to experience.”
Mr Marno – who is determined to “put Scotland on the map” by making good home-grown films – added that he was hopeful films made locally would one day be given the big screen treatment.
He said: “It would be fantastic for the industry as well, who knows what Aberdeen is going to do next with the film industry. It’s going to grow.
“I think anything up here is great as long as it the film industry is getting bigger and better.”
