A man has died while working on the construction of Aberdeen’s new Baird Family Hospital.
Emergency services, including two ambulances, a resuscitation rapid response unit and a trauma team, were called to the site, at Foresterhill, at 9.40am today.
However, the 52-year-old, who is believed to have suffered a head injury, could not be saved.
Construction company Graham, which is currently leading the project, confirmed the incident involved one of their sub-contractors and that work has been halted.
The Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation and the matter has been reported to the procurator fiscal.
A spokeswoman for Graham said: “We can confirm an incident involving one of our sub-contractors took place today and that emergency services were called.
“We have halted work on site and are liaising with the emergency services and Health and Safety Executive.”
A HSE spokesman said: “HSE is aware of the incident. We are currently liaising with Police Scotland and will be investigating alongside them.”
New hospital due to open next year
The Baird Family Hospital is due to open next March following a two-year delay, blamed on rising costs, Covid and Brexit.
It will replace Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, which is due for demolition next August.
It’s being built alongside the Anchor Centre as part of a £245 million project.
The project has been in the works since 2014, and comprises the largest sum NHS Grampian has ever spent on a facility.
Work has now been halted on the site, while police and HSE investigate the incident.
A police spokeswoman said: “Around 9.40am on Wednesday January 18, we were called to a report of a man being injured at Foresterhill Health Campus, Aberdeen.
“Emergency services attended and a 52-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The Health and Safety Executive has been informed. A reported will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 9.37am to attend an incident on the grounds of Foresterhill Health Campus, Aberdeen.
“Two ambulances, a resuscitation rapid response unit, a paramedic response unit, one of our special operations response teams and a trauma team attended the scene.”
NHS Grampian has been approached for a comment.
