A cat saved from a grisly death on a Peterhead beach has found a new home – with the animal rescue volunteer who found her.
Corey Munro was walking home when he heard noises coming from a council recycling box that was dumped on rocks near the town’s Battery Park.
The 19-year-old discovered a cat trapped inside the box which was sealed with cable ties last month. He was left in no doubt someone had left it to drown, he said.
The box factory worker freed the terrified creature and notified the police and SSPCA.
He carried the animal back to the roadside in the hope it could make its way home but to no avail.
Instead, Mr Munro appealed for an owner to come forward and has been caring for it ever since at his Kirk Street home.
He said: “She’s made herself at home now and seems happy enough.
“We have another cat in the house called Amber and they’re getting along just fine now.”
Officers from the animal welfare charity visited Mr Munro and the cat, who was first named Tiger, with some surprising news.
“They came back to see her and that was when I found out it was a female – we found out the cat was actually a girl.”
No one has come forward to claim the moggy – who has now been renamed Lilly – so she will continue to live with Mr Munro.
Last night SSPCA chief superintendent Mike Flynn said, “The number of people banned from owning animals in Scotland is now at a record level and some of the cruelty we encounter is unimaginable.
“The public are our eyes and ears and we rely on them to contact us to report their concerns.
“We would encourage anyone who knows of an animal in distress to call our Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
“Information can be provided anonymously and is always treated in the strictest confidence.”
