Over 30 vehicles have been stopped in a Buchan residential area following an effort to crackdown on speeders.
Kinmundy Road in Peterhead, off the town’s bypass, was targeted by police over seven days from March 16 to March 23 after locals raised concerns with the force.
Police stopped 36 vehicles as a result with 11 drivers issued with fixed penalty notices.
Twenty-two drivers received warnings for speeding and one motorist was reported for dangerous driving after being caught driving at 60mph in a 30mph limit.
A further two drivers were warned for failing to wear their seat belts.
Last night, the operation was welcomed by Peterhead councillor Anne Allan who said the road had become a danger to pedestrians.
She said: “People come off the bypass and head down into town but don’t slow down,” she added.
“There’s a lot of housing up there, so there’s a lot of traffic and always a danger of pedestrian. So anything the police can do to cut down on any potential accident is good.”
Meanwhile, Sergeant David Pirie delivered a stark warning to motorists to observe the speed limit or “face the consequences”.
He said: “Drivers must take responsibility for their actions when behind the wheel of their vehicle or face the consequences.
“As with any other road in a built up area, this road is shared by drivers, pedestrians and cyclists alike, making it vitally important that speed limits are adhered to.”
Inspector Simon Reid, of the community policing team, added that road safety and road crime were matters that his team were taking seriously.
He said: “Road safety and road crime are matters that the Buchan community have highlighted to us as being a concern and are a local priority for our team.
“We repeatedly find that one of the most common factors for serious and fatal collisions on the region’s roads has been excessive or inappropriate speed for the road conditions.
Any serious or fatal collision has a devastating impact on the families involved and indeed the wider community.”
