A former landfill site will be brought back to life as a new recreational park and wildlife habitat.
The Wester Hatton landfill site near Balmedie has not been used since 2009.
Now FCC Environment has applied to transform the land into a area for wildlife to thrive and the local community to enjoy.
Members of the Formartine Area Committee agreed the proposals yesterday.
Councillor Paul Johnston said: “I’m delighted we’re finally getting to this point. It’s long overdue.
“It was like the Pillars of Hercules when you drove past with landfills on both sides – not a great introduction to Aberdeenshire. There’s only one word – yippee.”
As part of the project, trees will be planted on the lower slopes and heathland will be allowed to grow in the flatter areas to “complement” the surrounding landscape.
Footpaths are also to be created with existing wetlands to remain.
In a report, director of infrastructure services Stephen Archer said: “As members are aware this site has not been operated for a considerable period of time. The restoration proposals will redevelop this site into one that will enhance wildlife and public amenity.”
The project is expected to be complete within four years.
A number of conditions have been imposed on developers, including the removal of contaminated land before the project gets underway.
