Tens of firefighters tackled a blaze on a jet fuel tanker on a major Aberdeenshire road tonight.
A total of five fire appliances and one special vehicle were sent to the scene at around seven o’clock after the tanker’s cab went alight on the A90 northbound just outside Stonehaven.
The white tanker was marked with a ‘flamable’ sign although the fire didn’t spread beyond the cab- which was completely destroyed.
Police closed the road northbound at around half past seven and put local diversions in place.
Southbound, drivers were forced through Stonehaven to continue on their journey.
Ambulance crews were in attendance and took the driver to hospital to be treated for minor smoke inhalation.
The blaze was extinguished by firefighters about 50 minutes after the initial call.
Fire chiefs could not say what the cause of the fire was last night.
A fire service spokeswoman said: “We were made aware of the incident at around 19.01 and were given the stop message at 19.47.
“Five appliances were called- two from Stonehaven, two from Aberdeen and one from Lawrencekirk.
“A total of 31 firefighters were present.
“The tanker was carrying jet fuel.”
A police spokesman said: “Ambulance crews were asked to attend to check over the driver of the vehicle.
“It does not appear he had any serious injuries.”
