The driver of a tanker carrying 37,000 litres of jet fuel that caught on fire on a major Aberdeenshire road last night escaped serious injury, and has been treated for smoke inhalation.
A total of five fire appliances and one special vehicle were sent to the scene at around 7pm last night after the tanker’s cab went alight on the A90 northbound just outside of Stonehaven.
The white tanker was marked with a flammable sign, although thankfully the fire didn’t spread beyond the cab, which was completely destroyed.
The driver was taken to ARI to be treated for minor smoke inhalation. Fire chiefs do not yet know the cause of the blaze.
Police closed the road northbound at around 7.30pm and put diversions in place. Drivers were forced through Stonehaven to continue their journey southbound.
The road was shut for more than four hours while police waited for the area to cool down, and it was reopened at 11.30pm.
