Developer pledges more than £1million to dual busy route

The new community of Grandhome, which will see almost £1billion invested in up to 7,000 homes, a new town centre, a business district and amenities

A developer has agreed to pay more than £1million to dual part of Aberdeen’s Parkway.

The Grandhome Trust, the group behind the creation of a new 7,000-home scheme in Bridge of Don, will pay £1,177,500 to upgrade the road.

The money, which is part of the developer’s contributions for the area, would be used to dual the route between the roundabout at Buckie Farm and the end of the crawler lane heading northbound.

If the plans go ahead, this would still leave a section of the road, to Persley Bridge, single carriageway.

Yesterday city council finance convener Willie Young said it would be “daft” for the council not to dual the remainder of the road near the roundabout.

He added: “We recognise the benefits of doing this.”

An agreement between the local authority and the Grandhome Trust states: “The Parkway dualling contribution shall be utilised by the council to dual the Parkway between the new access junction into the development and the upgraded Buckie Farm junction.”

The first phase of the project – called Laverock Braes – is to be built by Bancon Homes, Cala Homes and Dandara and will comprise 600 homes to be completed over the next four to five years.

By 2030, the 320-hectare site, north of Danestone, could encompass 7,000 homes.

The council has already granted permission in principle for the first 4,700 properties, a town centre, business district and community facilities.

A detailed planning application for the first phase will be submitted in the spring and work is expected to begin later this year.

As a result of the devopment, the Grandhome Trust has also agreed to contribute towards other upgrades along the Parkway.

These include £3.7million for improvements to the Buckie Farm roundabout, £1.3million to upgrade the Balgownie Road junction, £668,554 for work at Scotstown Road and £756,397 for improvements to Whitestripes Avenue.
