Fundraisers who have sailed down the River Don on everything from Peter Pan’s alligator to a homemade forklift truck are preparing to do it all again.
The Garioch Lions organise the raft race every summer, and are looking forward to seeing what colourful creations will be at the starting line this year.
The rafts will set sail from Kembhill Park at Kemnay and head to Don Bridge at Inverurie on Sunday, June 7.
And with entries down last year, organisers are hoping to attract individuals, groups and even local businesses to sign up to boost funds for local kidney and cancer research causes.
Jim Souter, vice-president and secretary of the Garioch Lions, said: “We never know how many people are going to turn up, they just download the form and come along.
“We were down a little last year, we had about 20 rafts which meant the money we raised was also down, so we’re hoping for a good turnout this year.
“Over the last five years we’ve raised between £35,000-£36,000 and it’s always split between kidney and cancer research in Aberdeen.
“It’s a very good cause – I’m sure everyone knows of someone that has been affected by cancer or kidney problems.”
Various prizes will be awarded, including for the best raft, best dressed crew and to the team who has raised most money.
Mr Souter, who has taken part in the race six times, urged anyone thinking about taking part to pick up an entry form and get building their raft.
“There’s been some fantastic rafts over the years,” he said. “It’s a great day of fun. There’s lots of spectators and a barbecue at the Kemnay end, as well as entertainment for youngsters and a bouncy castle.
“At the Inverurie end, we invite local charities to come along and take a stall to raise some money. It’s a really fun, enjoyable day.”
The race starts at 1pm, but judging of the rafts will take place at noon.
