A Nepalese Buddhist monk, based in Aberdeen, has appealed for funds for his brothers back home to distribute to the needy in the tragedy-hit country.
Venerable Sujan from the Varaunya Meditation Centre on Constitution Street said money was “desperately needed” in the aftermath of Saturday’s earthquake which left more than 3,600 dead.
He said: “We’re co-ordinating a relief effort with monks in Nepal where we will send them money and they will provide aid to the people there.
“We have three centres across the UK so this is a cross-country effort.
“I’ve spoken with my brother in Nepal and thankfully he’s alright but there are lots of people struggling with no food or water and their houses destroyed.
“Officials have warned that the number of casualties could rise as rescue teams reach remote mountainous areas of western Nepal.
“Monks have no possessions so they will be totally committed to helping the people there.”
Donations are being accepted to a Varapunya meditation centre account, c/o HSBC, Aberdeen, S/C 40-01-25 A/C No 8139-2948.
Alternately cheques can be sent to Varapunya meditation centre, 92 Constitution Street, Aberdeen, AB24 5EX.
