The volunteers behind one of the north-east’s most popular charity events are to be honoured with a national award in recognition of their outstanding fundraising achievements.
The organisers of Relay for Life Peterhead – an annual 24-hour walk in the north-east’s biggest town – have raised more than £1million in the last 10 years.
The event was the first of its kind in the UK to break a seven-figure sum in support of Cancer Research UK.
The organising committee was chosen from among 400 nominations from across the UK to scoop the top award in the fundraising in the community category.
Lorraine Coleman, chairwoman of the Peterhead Relay committee, said: “The success of Relay For Life Peterhead is down to everyone who has supported us over the nine years and to those who are doing this year’s Relay.
“We also have our survivors who show great spirit and who are an inspiration to us all and a testament to the life-saving work that Cancer Research UK funds.”
Fiona Harvey, Cancer Research UK local fundraising manager for the north east of Scotland, added: “Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer.
“However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of volunteers and supporters.”
Three members of the committee will pick up the award at a special ceremony in London on June 5.
