A teenager has appeared in court accused of murdering a man in Fraserburgh during an alleged stabbing at the weekend.
Alfie Whelan, 19, was arrested and charged following a disturbance on Watermill Road, around 6pm on Sunday June 4.
Emergency services found a seriously injured 24-year-old man at the scene, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The dead man has been named as Michael Jenkins, from Cumbria.
Whelan, who it’s understood was also injured in the incident and taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment, appeared in private at Peterhead Sheriff Court this afternoon.
He is facing three charges – murder, being concerned with the supplying of an illegal drug and breaching the Sexual Offences Scotland Act 2009 by communicating indecently.
On Wednesday, Whelan, whose address was given as the Surrey town of Sutton, made no plea and was remanded in custody.
‘Beyond heartbroken and in complete shock’
According to his Facebook profile, Mr Jenkins was engaged and living in Workington, Cumbria, but was originally from Leeds.
The 24-year-old’s sister, Rachel Grace, revealed her shock and spoke of her heartbreak on social media.
In a Facebook post, she said: “I genuinely don’t have the words right now, but I can confirm my brother Michael Jenkins has sadly passed away.
“Please, we don’t know any details, I’m beyond heartbroken and I’m just in complete shock.
“I’ve tried to inform everyone that I could before Chinese whispers started but as everyone knows he was loved by everyone who knew him.
“Michael, I love you forever.”
Mr Jenkins’ brother also paid tribute. In a statement released by Police Scotland, the relative – who was not named – said: “Where to start!
“I am so grateful that you were such a massive part of my life for so long, I feel honoured and privileged to be able to call you my brother.
“There is a whole town in mourning, and the saddest part of all is you probably didn’t realise how loved you were.
“I’d like to tell people the amazing side of Michael, the lad who devoted his time and love to the people he cared for, he would come running whenever you called his name, he would pick you up when you fell, and he was always there to give you a great big cuddle, whenever you needed one.
“Mike will be missed by so many, a son, a brother, an uncle, a partner, a friend, a grandson, and a friendly smile even to those that didn’t know him.
“Life wasn’t always kind to you Mike, but you showed the world a lot of kindness, fly high my brother, sleep peacefully, don’t forget to leave the light on for me on the other side … We all love you.”
Hundreds of people have paid tribute to Mr Jenkins, who has been described as a “one-of-a-kind lad”.
Frank Peel commented on Facebook: “Michael had a heart of gold. He touched hearts like no other person I know”.
And Brandon Murdoch added: “He was an awesome funny lad and will be thoroughly missed”.
Area commander Chief Inspector Sam Buchan has previously said that a visible police presence will remain in the affected area over the coming days.
“Our thoughts are with the deceased man’s loved ones at this difficult time,” Ch Insp Buchan said.
“We have a dedicated team of officers working on this investigation to establish the full circumstances.
“I understand this incident will be concerning to people but I would like to reassure everyone, from our inquiries so far, there is no wider risk to the public.”
Whelan is due to reappear in court within the next eight days.
