Hundreds of people attended an annual animal fun day in the north-east yesterday.
Dogs Action Working Group Scotland (DAWGS), whose headquarters are in Aberdeen, has organised the Day in the Country event at Haddo House, Tarves, for the past six years.
The charity specialises in rehoming dogs throughout the area, and further afield, and has paired more than 3,000 pooches with new owners since it was set up over 20 years ago.
Organisers put on a range of light-hearted animal pageant and races, including the “waggiest tail” competition.
Around 300 people turned out and, speaking last night, event organiser Lynn Paterson said the day proved to be a big success.
She said: “The event is less about raising money and more about raising awareness.
“We have events going on throughout the afternoon and it’s very much about being a fun dog show, nothing serious like Crufts.
“People often think we only cover Aberdeen because our office is there, but we cover the whole of the north-east and up as far as the Western Isles and Orkney and Shetland – just wherever we’re needed.”
As well as the contests and games, the event also supported a campaign to help pay for an injured north-east dog’s vet treatment.
A campaign to raise funds for injured greyhound Millie has been running since the dog came into the care of Methlick-based
Give a Greyhound a Home (Gagah) in January.
The seven-month-old dog required 22 metal pins in her leg to straighten deformed bones caused in a fight with another dog, and has been left with vet bills which could reach upwards of £3,500.
Big-hearted Press and Journal readers have already contributed to the appeal and have helped Millie reach the £2,000 mark.
And at yesterday’s event, DAWGS handed over a further £500.
