A popular event in aid of cancer charities will return to Aberdeen for a fifth year this weekend, thanks to the dedication of its organiser.
Kate Beaton will join participants for the 5k walk on Sunday as they set out on a route through the city to raise money for the Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
Walkers will set off from the Bon Accord Golf Club at 11am, heading past Broad Hill and then along the beach before returning to their starting point.
At the finishing line they will be treated to brunch and invited to take part in a raffle and tombola in aid of the two charities.
Mrs Beaton has raised more than £80,000 in previous years and the walk has become a popular annual outing in Aberdeen.
She is looking forward to this weekend and the chance to add to her total.
She said: “I hope to raise as much money as possible to help beat this awful disease.
“My sister has had breast cancer and everyone knows someone affected by the disease so it’s crucial that we continue to help fund vital research and help save lives.
“The walk has proved very successful over the years and I’m very grateful to everyone who has taken part.
“I hope that this year will be just as popular and that local people continue to come along and enjoy a lovely scenic walk while supporting a fantastic charity.”
The two charities, Breast Cancer Campaign, and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, are due to merge together next month to form the leading breast cancer campaign in Europe.
They are working towards a commitment that by 2050 nobody will die as a result of breast cancer.
Currently they work with about 113,000 cancer patients as they battle with the disease, as well as providing funds for research.
Community engagement officer Niamh O’Shea is grateful for the funds which Mrs Beaton has generated in recent years and hopes she will keep going to help the charity achieve its long-term goal.
She said: “We really appreciate the hard work of all our dedicated supporters and wish Kate every success with her walk. We believe breast cancer can be stopped, and we believe that research holds the key.
“It is down to the hard work of inspiring supporters like Kate that we can invest in life-saving breast cancer research, and together we are determined to stop breast cancer taking the women we love.”
There is still a chance to be part of the fundraising exercise this weekend.
