Police in Stonehaven will be upping their patrols over the coming weeks to target drivers flouting the law.
From Saturday, officers will be carrying out extra checks to crack down on illegal parking and offences such as not wearing a seatbelt and using a mobile phone while driving.
The two-week operation is in response to concerns raised by the local community, and is being run as part of Operation Cedar (Challenge, Educate, Detect and Reduce).
Constable Colin Logan, from Kincardine and Mearns community policing team, said: “The safety of all pedestrians and road users is paramount, especially around school areas.
“I am urging motorists to be aware of their surroundings and in particular, where they are parking.
“Unfortunately there is always the potential that a child could run across a road and a car parked in a restricted area could lead to a motorist being unable to see a child crossing until it is too late.
“Officers will educate drivers on appropriate parking and adhering to the laws.”
Motorists caught breaking the law will be issued with fixed penalty notices and points, or reported to the procurator fiscal depending on the offence.
Constable Logan added: “The operation starts on Saturday and officers will be out on patrol over the two-week period. Stonehaven is a busy town with residents and visitors who come to enjoy all that the town offers.
“I would urge motorists to think carefully about where they park and to consider their own safety and the safety of others by always wearing a seatbelt and not using a mobile phone whilst driving.”
