School pupils turned out in their hundreds yesterday to make their local park a rubbish-free zone.
The effort was part of the ongoing Clean Up Aberdeen project, which is encouraging residents to team up and tidy the places in the city that matter to them.
About 270 youngsters from Hazlehead Primary School teamed up with another 200 from Hazlehead Academy and other volunteers to work their magic on Hazlehead Park.
When the work was done the youngsters were rewarded with refreshments from Dolphin Fish and Chips, Hazlehead Golf Club and the Park Cafe.
The food was supplied by Friends of Hazlehead as a thank you for all their efforts.
Aberdeen City Council’s environmental services department is supporting the mission to clean up the city and is providing black bin bags, litter picking tongs, gloves and high-visibility vests to anyone willing to get involved.
Vice-convener of the communities, housing and infrastructure committee Jean Morrison said she was delighted to see so many volunteers taking part yesterday.
She said: “We know people want to have clean and tidy areas and so we welcome community involvement to help achieve this as unfortunately our environmental waste teams can’t be around the entire city at all times.
“The event is also educational for our school pupils to show them that it’s everyone’s responsibility to keep our country clean and tidy and what happens when you don’t.”
