Abandoned care home expected to ease housing waiting list in Turriff

A project to transform a former care home into affordable housing could help to ease a massive waiting list for homes in the north-east.

Planners are eager to transform Errol Court in Turriff into 12 new homes but need approval to knock down nearby garages on Hatton Road before they can progress with the £1.6million scheme.

Aberdeenshire Council’s Formartine area committee will meet tomorrow to discuss the proposal.

The homes would completely replace the care complex after the building was deemed unfit for conversion.

There are currently 1,148 people waiting for a home in the area.

In a report to councillors, the local authority’s director of communities Ritchie Johnson said: “Clearly there is identified housing need in Turriff.

“The provision of 12 units on this site would address identified housing need in the short-term.”

Some of the owners of the garages scheduled to be demolished are unhappy with the plans.

Eight of those consulted said they were unhappy with the proposal. Three understood the need for demolition and two did not respond. One of the garages was not in use.

Owners will be given 28-days notice to clear their belongings from the garages if the plans are approved.

Mr Johnson added: “They have been advised that they will be put to the top of the list for other garages in Turriff.”

Approval to demolish Erroll Court itself has already been granted.

Turriff community council chairman Ben Ewen said the scheme was likely to find favour with locals.

“We as a community council haven’t had people complaining,” he said.

“You can’t put people into garages and there is a high demand for houses in Turriff.”
