For years he visited the Taste of Grampian as just another face in the crowd.
However, when Norman Calder appeared at this year’s gathering it was in a very different capacity.
As the retired Merchant Navy seaman made his way through the crowds of food and drink enthusiasts he was stopped in his tracks at every turn as fans of the Great British Bake Off clamoured for chats and selfies with Buckie’s best-known son.
Mr Calder, who shot to fame in the TV baking show last year, was also one of the stars of this year’s Taste of Grampian.
He attracted a giant crowd for his morning demonstration, during which he prepared a gateau fraisier, before going head-to-head with Great British Bake Off winner, Nancy Birtwhistle, in the JG Ross bakery competition when he stormed to victory mentoring contestant Alison Green.
He said he had enjoyed every minute.
“It has been fantastic, a great day. I had almost a full house at the demonstration,” said Mr Calder.
“I have been out talking to people, having my photographs taken and been encouraging people to apply to the Bake Off.
“I have been here as a member of the public before, but it is nice to come here and get the VIP treatment. I am kind of used to being recognised now.”
Mr Calder added that he and Ms Birtwhistle were good friends and that all the contestants were still in touch.
And he revealed he had “upped his game” since starring in the show, and had become much more adventurous as a baker.
