A person has died after being hit by a train between Aberdeen and Dundee.
The incident happened near Balmossie Station just after 10.30am this morning.
The person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to Balmossie station at 10.35am today following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended. However, sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.
“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the procurator fiscal.”
Railway line closed after death
The railway line between Dundee and Aberdeen is closed as a result of the incident.
ScotRail says services are suspended between Montrose and Aberdeen, and Dundee and Arbroath.
Passengers are also unable to travel on the line from Aberdeen to Edinburgh or Glasgow.
National Rail says services may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised.
It anticipates disruption will continue until 2pm.
Passengers are permitted to use their tickets on Stagecoach East Buses services on route 73/73A between Dundee and Arbroath.
Alternative transport between Dundee and Aberdeen
Passengers can use their train tickets on:
- Stagecoach services on route 73/73A between Dundee and Arbroath.
- CityLink buses on routes M9 and M92 between Dundee and Aberdeen.
- LNER services between Aberdeen and Edinburgh
Rail replacement transport from Dundee is running but, due to limited availability, ScotRail has been unable to source replacement transport from Aberdeen.
Customers travelling south from Aberdeen should make their own arrangements until train services are able to operate again.
Incident followed signalling fault
The incident comes hours after a signalling fault in the Arbroath area was cited for closing the same line.
Network Rail tweeted: “We’ve fixed the signalling issue between Arbroath and Dundee, however, the emergency services are dealing with an incident on the line in the area now.
“Services will continue to be disrupted while they work.”
