The signal, which turned out to be the second false alarm in the area in as many days, was first picked up at around 8am. Stornoway Coastguard also picked up the distress call and alerted Aberdeen teams. However, shortly afterwards both Canadian and Aberdeen coastguards confirmed it was a false alarm. Yesterday, a major North Sea search and rescue operation was launched after a beacon was set off around nine miles from Fraserburgh. The operation involved a RNLI lifeboat from the north-east port as well as a coastguard helicopter from Inverness. The search was stood down after it was confirmed the call was a false alarm.
