A seven-year-old boy from Portlethen is set to put his best foot forward in order to help cancer patients like his father.

Campbell Cummings is set to walk more than 10 kilometres around Aberdeen’s Duthie Park in aid of the charity Friends of Anchor next month.

Campbell’s dad, Steven Cummings was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in September 2022.

But after receiving chemotherapy from the Anchor team at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, he is now back on the mend.

And now his youngest, Campbell, wants to repay the favour with a sponsored walk for charity Friends of Anchor.

Joined by his older brother Leo, 12, will loop the park until the target of 10k is reached on December 17.

The Portlethen Primary pupil has already raised £1,400 and dad Steven admitted that he would’ve been happy with only £1,000.

‘Let’s go for it’

He said: “I try to keep fit and help myself, and Campbell likes to go out for walks at night with me.

“I’ve got a double adapter for my phone so we put that on and listen to music and chat.

“We usually go by the golf course in Portlethen, or through Hillside and Findon.

“We were out one night and talking about my 40th birthday party, where we raised money for Friends of Anchor.

“Campbell was involved in that too but said he wanted to do something else to raise money before Christmas, and suggested a walk. Obviously I said ‘let’s go for it’”.

Big brother Leo will also be among those supporting his efforts on December 17.

‘A nice way to help other people like my daddy’

Leo, who likes playing football and golf, said: “I want to make a difference in the hospital for cancer patients.

“Walking is important to me and my dad. We go out together at night so I thought this would be a nice way to help other people like my daddy.

“I hope we can get to £1,000, I’d be so happy. Some of my friends have already sponsored me, so fingers crossed more people do too – or come and walk with us.”

Friends of Anchor is an Aberdeen-based charity which directly supports the Anchor Unit at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by providing wellbeing services and funding equipment and research.

The Unit is the main cancer and haematology care facility in the region and is used by patients from the north and north-east of Scotland as well as the northern isles.

Campbell and Steven’s big walk starts at 10am and you can donate to the fundraiser here.
