A mysterious artwork by an anonymous artist has spread its wings and will be delighting audiences in the north-east for the next month.
The piece, which features paper butterflies flying from an open book, has gone on display at Aberdeen Central Library as part of a tour of Scotland.
Its creator sent the art world into a flutter when she gave a series of similar book sculptures to various cultural institutions in Edinburgh between 2011 and 2013.
Her latest work was donated to Macmillan Cancer Support last year, before being purchased by Dr Colin Mackenzie, who has arranged for it to go on display across the country.
The artist announced plans earlier this year to make one final book sculpture, and is inviting members of the public to submit paper butterflies to form part of it.
A series of workshops will take place in libraries in Aberdeen this month, at which youngsters will be shown how to make their own contributions.
Sessions will take place in Mastrick Library tomorrow, in Dyce Library on Friday and in Ferryhill on Thursday, July 16, all starting at 2.30pm.
An event for youngsters aged four to eight will be held in the children’s section of the Central Library next Monday, when they will be shown how to design a paper caterpillar.
Aberdeen City Council’s convener of education and children’s services, councillor Angela Taylor, said: “This is a unique and delicate piece of artwork and it’s great to see it here in Aberdeen.
“The prospect of creating your own butterfly for the mysterious artist to use in her sculpture is very exciting and the free events to coincide with the exhibition will be a source of inspiration to all involved.”
