A former Royal Marine is taking on a marching challenge in an attempt to raise money for injured soldiers.
Simon Maryan, 43, hopes to raise £3,000 to help fund care for former servicemen and women by walking 100 miles in four days.
And while completing the challenge, which will take him through Inverness, he will carry a backpack weighing 100lb.
Mr Maryan is originally from Aberdeen but now lives in Turriff and said that the idea came to him in a “moment of madness”.
He said: “I left the military after 15 years, came back to Aberdeen, and have worked for a number of different organisations doing surveillance and security.
“But there’s a bunch of guys down in England doing a 50-50, 50 miles with 50lb, for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust.
“It’s a long way down south, and I just thought I couldn’t afford the time off to go down – it was too much time out.
“So I thought I’d do something by myself up here. I couldn’t do the same thing as them, because that’s their thing, and for some reason, which I still can’t figure out, I liked the sound of 100-100.
“Before I knew it, I was in touch with the trust and I’d set up the JustGiving page, and somebody had donated. I couldn’t back out then. I kind of snookered myself, really.”
Mr Maryan leaves for Inverness Castle, where he will begin the 100-mile route, next week.
He will then walk through “commando country” on Tuesday, and finish on Friday, July 17, at the Commando Memorial near Spean Bridge.
