A recycling group in Deeside has launched a new service collecting unwanted IT equipment from local homes and businesses.
Recycle (Deeside Services) has been working in the local community for 10 years, collecting, sorting and recycling plastic bottles.
The group also recently opened Kraftwork in Aboyne, where refurbished furniture and recycled wooden pallets are sold, along with kindling, decorated wedding horse shoes and handmade soaps.
Now a collection service for unwanted computers, flat screen TVs and monitors, phones, tablets and printer ink cartridges has been launched for a six-month trial.
Once collected, the items will be stored, cleaned and packed for environmentally-friendly firm Re-Tek to safely resell and reuse.
Items that are complete, working order and in reasonably good condition will be accepted.
David Aitchison, chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s infrastructure services committee, urged people to make use of the pilot.
He said: “This group already makes a valuable contribution to our local environment and this is a great opportunity for people living on Deeside to get involved, disposing of unwanted technology and assisting a local community group at the same time.
“It is great to see them branching out, developing new business models and means of generating income while offering the chance of work experience to local people who may benefit from the opportunity.”
Recycle (Deeside Services) is run by Aberdeenshire Council’s social work department for people who may need training and support to get employment.
The latest IT recycling scheme is being run in conjunction with Re-Tek and Enscape.
