A 37-year-old man has died and another has been arrested following an incident in the Tillydrone area of Aberdeen on Monday.
Police were called to Elphinstone Court, near Montgomery Crescent, at around 3:30pm yesterday afternoon after concerns were raised for a person.
A man was found dead near a play park, while another man – also 37 – was arrested in connection with an alleged assault.
Officers have now increased their presence in the area, with forensic teams joining them at the scene.
The identity of the man who died is not known at this time.
A large blue tent has been erected outside the high rise on Elphinstone Court and taped off.
While residents can access the building, police extended the cordon this morning to prevent access to the snow-covered play park while enquiries continue.
This morning, parents taking their children to school had to navigate several police cars and cordons in the area.
Police cars and uniforms stood out against the white snow as they patrolled the tower block.
One neighbour said they heard screaming from a flat yesterday morning.
Others told The Press and Journal they were shocked by the tragedy and described the area as usually very calm.
They said: “Nothing like this happens here.”
Another resident who has lived in Tillydrone for 17 years was alerted to the incident when she saw an ambulance drive past.
She said mums and dads have had to walk past the tent taking their children to and from school.
Having lived in the area for so long, she said it gets “a bad reputation” but that she has “always felt safe” living in Tillydrone.
Another eyewitness, who was on site at the time of the incident, recalled seeing a green tarp being placed over the body.
He said: “You don’t expect to see something like this on a daily basis. I grew up here and there was nothing like this, never something this serious.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of concern for a man at a property on Elphinstone Court in Aberdeen around 3.30pm on Monday January 15.
“Emergency services attended and a 37-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Another 37-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an assault and inquiries are ongoing.”
Forensic crews at the scene as police increase police cordon
Police have increased the cordon around the area of the building which include the play park and the walkways.
Forensic crews arrived at the scene shortly after 2pm.
They are currently working at the scene and were seen placing items of clothing scattered around the tower block into large evidence bags.
They also entered the expanded area around the blue tent to collect evidence.
This is a breaking news story and there will be more to follow.
