Organisers of one of the north-east’s premier agricultural shows are putting the finishing touches to the event before the gates open this weekend.
As many as 10,000 visitors are expected to travel to the New Deer Show to see displays of prize livestock and take part in a host of family events.
Situated in the heart of the Buchan countryside, the annual event boasts one of the largest horse shows in the area as well as trade stands and vintage tractor displays.
This year’s president, New Deer-based farmer Alan Buchan, said: “The weather’s fine today so we’re keeping one eye on the forecast. Let’s hope it stays dry because that makes all the difference.
“We’re getting all the machinery in today and finishing last minute preparations.
“We’ve received some funding from the Scottish Government and chef Craig Wilson from Eat on the Green is coming to do a cooking demonstration on Sunday.
“We estimate we’ll get an average of 5,000 people through the gates each day.”
Mr Buchan has followed the traditional route to assume the mantle of New Deer Show presidency, serving first as junior vice-president, then vice-president before ascending to his current role.
He hopes this year’s show might prove to be one of the most successful yet.
“We’ve got a special attraction this year – Stunt Mania motorcycle group are doing a demonstration,” he said.
“Our cattle and sheep entries are up, and our horse entries are up on last year. Our trade stands are looking pretty healthy too.
“There’s a lot to see I think. The weather can make or break it, but there are plenty of places to shelter if it rains and the site is accessible.”
The 2015 New Deer Show runs at Craigieford Park near the village on Saturday and Sunday. The annual marquee dance will be held tomorrow night.
