Three drivers were caught doing speeds of more than 100mph at the weekend.
The culprits – who were caught near Elgin, Stonehaven and Hatton – were three of the 45 speeders caught during a police crackdown over the weekend.
Officers focused on several key routes in Moray and Aberdeenshire, and stopped a total of 211 people for various offences.
Yesterday, the division’s roads policing inspector Ewan Innes slammed irresponsible drivers who were not only risking their own lives, but those of children and even tourists enjoying the summer break.
One driver was clocked at 101mph on the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road, near Elgin. Five other drivers were caught on the stretch between Elgin and Inverurie doing speeds of more than 86mph.
Two others were stopped on the A90 Dundee to Fraserburgh road, one near Hatton for driving at 103mph, and another near Stonehaven for hitting 101mph.
A total of 211 people were stopped during the crackdown across the police’s “priority routes” – the A96, the A90, the A92 Stonehaven to Montrose road and the A98 Fraserburgh to Fochabers road.
One woman and four men were also charged for being under the influence of alcohol behind the wheel, whilst another two drivers were reported for dangerous driving and three others for careless driving.
Insp Innes said: “These drivers are driving at this speeds on rural roads, they are presenting a real danger to people and themselves.
“The majority of road users do drive in a responsible manner, it is only the minority we’re talking about here. They are driving in an irresponsible manner.
“We are into summer at the moment and there is children going about at night, but there are also tourists on the go and cyclists on the go. They need to start thinking about their actions and consequences.
“There were 16 collisions throughout the weekend and quite a number of offences. There was no fatal or serious collisions thankfully.”
Last night Moray MSP Richard Lochhead said: “It is concerning to hear that such a high number of drivers are taking such a risk on our local roads.
“Whilst the number of fatalities and serious accidents has reduced in recent years, the numbers remain too high and a major factor is driver behaviour.”
Chairman of the Fraserburgh and District Community Safety Group Brian Topping said the speeds recorded over the weekend were “total stupidity”.
He added: “It is sometimes quite easy when you are watching the road to get go a bit over the limit without realising, but that is actually crazy speeds.
“That is putting their own lives at risk as well as others.
“If something suddenly happened there is no way they are going to be able to stop in time.”
Ron McKail, chairman of the Garioch and North Marr Community Safety Group said: “I think it is ridiculous. These are shocking figures. I am disappointed that drivers are putting themselves at risk as well as others.
“Speed kills and figures tell us that speed kills. People should be sticking to the mandatory speed limit and driving with care.
“As somebody who drives on rural roads fairly often I know you have to have your wits about you.”
A further 67 offences for matters such mobile phone use behind the wheel were reported by officers across the weekend.
