A north-east community has received its final team talk before a host of sports and fitness activities kick off across the town.
The council’s Active Fraserburgh campaign will offer residents of the town a chance to take part in more than 50 different activities aimed at improving health and social spirit.
The launch of the initiative, part of the wider Active Aberdeenshire scheme, comes as new figures from NHS Grampian show one in four adults in the north-east are officially obese.
One in 10 five-year olds also fall into that category as the health board highlighted a “significant rise” in obesity.
Last night Fraserburgh’s regeneration officer, Gillian Bain, urged local people to turn out and take part.
“It’s the first time this has been done,” she said. “It’s a week-long series of taster session to encourage people to try out a sport for the first time or to try something they may have had an interest in previously.”
Activities on offer – which will take place across 14 different venues around Fraserburgh – include jogging, skateboarding, football, zumba and even Scottish country dancing.
Miss Bain continued: “The idea is that by getting involved in sport we encourage people to be more sociable and to be healthier. This can remove barriers to people getting healthy.”
The activities will be run next week, and are free and available to everyone. Once Active Fraserburgh week draws to a close, volunteer clubs and council classes will be run for all the activities involved.
Miss Bain added: “We want to showcase Fraserburgh as an excellent location for sport with the facilities we have.”
Active Fraserburgh Week will run from Monday until Friday and is part of Aberdeenshire Council’s ongoing effort to regenerate the town.
Fraserburgh Football Club and O’Neil Surf Academy Scotland are among the organisations involved in laying on the events.
Details for all the events can be found online.
