A tragic hillwalker who died after falling 600ft from a ridge next to Britain’s highest mountain was named today.
Steven Fogg, from Aboyne, 56, slipped while walking on the Carn Mor Dearg Arete route to the summit of Ben Nevis on Friday morning.
He was airlifted to a hospital in Fort William where he sadly died.
His two walking companions were not believed to have been injured in the accident.
The trio were believed to be walking along the long rocky knife edge ridge of the Carn Mor Dearg Arete when the tragedy happened. It is a popular route for more experienced walkers to take to the summit of Ben Nevis and is said to be one of the best walks in Britain.
The challenging trek takes almost 10 hours to complete.
Police Scotland spokesman said: “At about 10am on Friday 7 August Police Scotland received a report of a mountain rescue incident on the Carn Mor Dearg Arete, Fort William.
“A group of three walkers were in the area when one of the men slipped and fell.
“Lochaber Mountain Rescue attended along with the Coastguard Helicopter. The man in his 50’s and from the Aboyne area, was airlifted to Fort William where sadly he died.”
