A project which has kept beaches in Scotland clean for ten years has been given a boost by Aberdeen shop workers.
Partners at John Lewis opted to donate £2772 raised from the 5p plastic bag charge to Fishing for Litter Scotland.
The money will go towards educational materials in primary schools as well as to set up a programme to encourage more people to get involved in cleaning up beaches.
Robert Garnish, head of Aberdeen’s John Lewis branch, said: “Being a coastal city, I think the link between money raised by charging for carrier bags and working to reduce marine litter is something we can all relate to so I am delighted that staff in Aberdeen have chosen to support Fishing for Litter Scotland.
“Whilst there will be a tangible benefit as a result of the funds raised, from an environmental perspective it has also been great to see a significant drop in the purchasing of new carrier bags over the past nine months.”
Graham Humphries, who co-ordinates the project said:
“We are delighted to receive the support of John Lewis and will make good use of the funds.
“Plastic bags are a real problem as all too often they get blown into the sea where they cause real harm.”
