A biker has been banned from the roads for more than a year after he crashed his motorcycle while twice the legal alcohol limit.

Nicholas McDonald was spotted by witnesses falling off his bike while he road down the A90 Aberdeen to Ellon road on April 21.

Concerned he may have injured himself one worried passerby called the police and when they arrived they noticed he was smelling strongly of alcohol and struggling to process information.

A roadside breath test was then carried out on the 26-year-old and it was discovered he had 94 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

Yesterday, McDonald of Hillhead of Leys, Auchmacoy, Ellon, appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court and admitted getting on his bike while over the limit.

The court heard the incident took place at around 11.20pm. Representing McDonald, solicitor Gregor Kelly said his client had been at home that evening and had not intended leaving.

However, shortly before the incident he received a phone call from a friend in distress and he decided to leave to go and help them.

Mr Kelly said McDonald, a carer for an elderly couple in Ellon, “stupidly” got on his motorcycle. He said his client accepted that he was wrong to do so.

Sheriff Graham Buchanan banned McDonald from the road for 16 months and fined him £1,125.
