A man has been banned from the roads after his careless overtaking manoeuvre caused a crash at the Bridge of Don.
Matthew Gilligan, 31, was trying to overtake a stationary bus when he collided with Louise Galt’s car on Jesmond Drive.
As a result of the accident, Miss Galt suffered extensive bruising to her chest and whiplash, and had to take two weeks off work to recover at home.
Yesterday Gilligan appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court to be sentenced having previously admitted driving without due care and attention.
The court heard he had previously served a three year driving disqualification but had his licence back at the time of the crash.
Representing Gilligan, solicitor Michael Burnett said his client had worked in the oil and gas industry for the last 10 years but had recently lost his job due to the downturn in the industry.
He said if a fine was imposed it would impact greatly upon Gilligan’s wife and child.
Sheriff Alison Stirling ordered that Gilligan, of 53 Seaview Crescent, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen to carry out 90 hours of unpaid work in the community within the next six months.
He was also banned from the roads for a year.
